POPULAR SCIENCE AND ZINIO WIN FOR BEST “DIGITAL MAGAZINE EDITION"
AT MIN’S EDITORIAL & DESIGN AWARDS BREAKFAST
-- The Green Home Guide’s Dynamic Design Unleashes Unprecedented Reading Experience --
“We designed The Green Home Guide in partnership with Zinio to help all consumers better understand their resource consumption, leverage the newest technologies for carbon-footprint reduction and help them preserve the planet while saving them money,” says Mark Jannot, editor-in-chief of Popular Science. “It is a huge honor to be recognized by our peers and partners for our innovation in an area that is so important to our eco-conscious readers, as well as personally to our editorial and design staff.”
At a time when rising energy costs, summer heat and the national interest in green building were all driving environmental concerns to the front of readers’ minds, the experts at Popular Science launched The Green Home Guide, an exclusively digital, fully interactive multimedia magazine. Seeking to broaden the appeal of a topic that many readers can find overwhelming, The Green Home Guide boasts clickable 3-D models, pop-up animation and embedded original video in which Popular Science editors demonstrate green-home how-to’s. This week, the third of four planned digital “Genius Guides” – Popular Science Tech Buyer’s Guide – launches on zinio.com and popsci.com.
“Bringing to life the innovative format of the ‘Genius Guide’ with PopSci was a landmark achievement for the entire publishing industry, further defining what a digital publication can be,” said Doug Carlson, Managing Director, Zinio, who accepted the award. “It is our hope that other pioneers like PopSci will share our strategy for developing a multi-screen approach, including their use of our iPhone application, whereby consumers buy their content once, to be enjoyed seamlessly across all devices."
Advertisers in The Green Home Guide, whose support made it possible to offer the guide to readers at no cost, included companies that have been innovators in energy efficiency and green living, including General Electric, Samsung and Craftsman. In addition to winning “Best Digital Magazine” for The Green Home Guide, Zinio received two Honorable Mentions in the same category for VIVmag’s “Giving Back” and Esquire’s “How to Be a Man” issues.
